Robert S. Dotson graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1963. After pilot training, he instructed in the T-38 trainer and later flew the F-105 fighter in combat as a flight leader. He also graduated from Harvard University, and for two decades, he served as a civilian national-security specialist, both in the Executive Office of the President and on the staff of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He retired as a reserve brigadier general in 1993 and from civilian service in 1997.
